Thread Quick Union Wireline Tool String Rope Socket
The Tool-string is the name give to any assembly of equipment run in the well to perform some type of operation. In wireline work, the string is run, manipulated and retrieved by the upward or downward movement of the wire which is itself raised and lowered by a winch at the surface.
The tool string is make up of a number of basic components with various other service tools attached according to the type of operation undertake.
There are many different operations and may different conditions to be satisfied in each operation, so that the number and type of service tools available is very large, although some tools are used far more frequently than others. the precise configuration of tool string will be contingent on factors such as job type, access, hole deviation, depth, pressure, completion type, log history and so on.
Rope Socket
The Rope Socket-Pear Drop With Sleeve is used to attach wireline to the tool string. The pear drop rope socket is the most convenient model, which clamps the wireline by the pear-shaped wedge.
The principle of operation is that the wire, wrapped round a groove in the pear drop, is wedged in a taper between the pear drop and the mating sleeve.This wedge action grips the wire and is proportional to the tension applied to the wireline.
The benefits of this type of rope socket are that there are no sharp bends in the wire which reduces its ultimate tensile strength, and is a simple and quick way to make the connection to the wire.
Slip type Rope socket is designed for use with small braided lines up to 7/32” diameter. Slip type rope socket are available in various OD of sizes and consist of a body sub, carriage, slips, a set screw and features simplicity in construction and assembly.
The slips are designed to cause the line to break under severe loading at a specific percentage of the full line tensile strength. Standard 50% and 80% slips are available.
If during the operation the running tools become stuck, the operator is assured that the wire will break at the rope socket, rather than up-hole, allowing retrieval of the wireline.
Disc & Spring type Rope socket is used to securely attach 0.072”-0.108” wireline to the tool string. Available in various sizes, the rope socket consists of a body, spring, disc and spring support.
The body has three functions, a housing for the spring, disc and support, an integral fishing neck to allow the tool string to be pulled if lost, and a flat top preventing cutter bars from peening the wireline entry hole closed. The wireline is fastened to the grooved disc around its circumference. This groove is sufficiently deep to prevent damage to the wireline when the disc comes to bear against the spring support
